‘அறியப்படாத கிறிஸ்தவம்’ என்ற புத்தகம், நிவேதிதா லூயிஸ், ஸ்டாலின், கவிதா ராமு, கிழக்குப் பதிப்பகம் (1)
ஸ்டாலின், கவிதா ராமு முதலியோர் ஒன்றும் தெரியாதவர்கள் அல்ல: தமிழக முதல்வா் மு.க. ஸ்டாலினுக்கு மாவட்ட ஆட்சியா் கவிதா ராமு வழங்கிய ‘அறியப்படாத கிறிஸ்தவம்’ என்ற நூல் தொடா்பாக எழுந்த சா்ச்சை 13-06-2022 திங்கள்கிழமை முடிவுக்கு கொண்டு வரப்பட்டுள்ளது[1]. கடந்த 8ஆம் தேதி (08-06-2022, புதன் கிழமை) புதுக்கோட்டை வந்த முதல்வா் ஸ்டாலினை வரவேற்ற ஆட்சியா் கவிதா ராமு, அவரது தோழி நிவேதிதா லூயிஸ் எழுதிய ’அறியப்படாத கிறிஸ்தவம்’ என்ற நூலைப் பரிசளித்தார்[2]. மேலும் அப்படத்தை தனது முகநூல் பக்கத்தில் பகிர்ந்திருந்தார்[3]. இதையடுத்து, இதுதொடா்பான சா்ச்சை எழுந்தது. கடந்த 11ஆம் தேதி [11-06-2022] மாவட்ட பாஜக தலைவா் பிஆா். செல்வம் அழகப்பன், முதல்வா் ஸ்டாலினுக்கு அனுப்பிய கடிதத்தில் மத வேற்றுமையை விதைக்கும் வகையில் செயல்பட்ட ஆட்சியா் மீது நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும் எனக் குறிப்பிட்டிருந்தார்[4]. ஸ்டாலின் மாலை / சால்வை பதிலாக புத்தகம் கொடுக்கலாம் என்று ஐடியா கொடுத்திருந்தார். ஆனால், அதுவே “திராவிட மாடலில்” சர்ச்சையில் தான் சென்று கொண்டிருக்கிறது[5].
வழக்கம் போல இடதுசாரி போர்வையில் வகையறாக்கள் ஆதரவு: இதன் தொடா்ச்சியாக, தமிழ்நாடு முற்போக்கு எழுத்தாளா்- கலைஞா்கள் சங்கத்தின் மாநிலத் தலைவா் மதுக்கூா் ராமலிங்கம், பொதுச்செயலா் ஆதவன் தீட்சண்யா ஆகியோர் வெளியிட்ட அறிக்கையில், இந்நூல், கிறிஸ்தவத்துக்குள் இருக்கும் உள் முரண்களையும், மோதல்கள் குறித்தும் ஓரச்சார்பின்றிப் பேசுகிறது. எனவே, ஆட்சியா் நடுநிலை தவறிவிட்டார் என்பதை ஏற்க முடியாது எனத் தெரிவித்தனா்[6]. இதேபோல, அம்பேத்கா் மக்கள் இயக்கத்தின் செயல் தலைவா் இளமுருகு முத்து, புத்தகத்தின் அட்டை, தலைப்பை வைத்துக் கொண்டு, அப்புத்தகம் கிறிஸ்தவ மதப் பிரசாரம் செய்கிறது என்ற முடிவுக்கு பாஜகவினா் வர வேண்டியதில்லை எனக் கூறியுள்ளார்[7]. ஆனால், வலதுசாரி இயக்கத்தினர் வழக்கம் போல, எதிர்மறை பிரச்சாரம் செய்து விளம்பரம் கொடுத்துள்ளனர் எனலாம். அவர்களிடத்தில் இத்தகைய ஆளுமையும் இல்லை, ஒற்றுமையும் இல்லை. இந்தச் சூழலில், ஆட்சியா் கவிதா ராமு தனது முகநூல் பதிவை அகற்றியுள்ளதாகவும், அதற்கு நன்றி தெரிவிப்பதாகவும், மாவட்ட பாஜக தலைவா் செல்வம் அழகப்பன் திங்கள்கிழமை 13-06-2022 ஆட்சியருக்கு ஒரு கடிதம் அளித்துள்ளார்[8]. அத்துடன் கவிஞா் கண்ணதாசன் எழுதிய ‘அா்த்தமுள்ள இந்து மதம்’ என்ற நூலை ஆட்சியருக்கு வழங்கியுள்ளதாகவும் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்[9]. பரிசளிக்கப்பட்ட நூல் குறித்து எழுந்த சா்ச்சை ஒரு வழியாக முடிவுக்கு வந்திருக்கிறது[10]. இப்படியாக ஊடகங்கள் தலைப்பை மட்டும் மாற்றி, அரைத்த மாவையே அரைத்து ஊற்றியுள்ளன[11]. இதில் யாராவது அப்புத்தகத்தைப் படித்து, எழுதியுள்ளார்களா என்று தெரியவில்லை.
எஸ்.வி.ராஜதுரையின் ஆதரவு ‘பிரீமியம்’ கட்டுரை[12]: தமிழ்நாட்டின் நேர்மையான அதிகாரிகளில் ஒருவர் என்று பொதுமக்களிடம் நற்பெயர் எடுத்துள்ள புதுக்கோட்டை மாவட்ட ஆட்சியர் கவிதா ராமுவைப் பதவிநீக்கம் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்ற கோரிக்கையைத் தமிழ்நாடு முதல்வருக்கு விடுத்துள்ளார், அந்த மாவட்ட பாஜக தலைவர்[13]. ஆட்சியர் செய்த குற்றம் என்ன? – இரு பாகங்கள் கொண்டதும், நிவேதிதா லூயிஸ் எழுதியதுமான ‘அறியப்படாத கிறிஸ்தவம்’ என்ற நூலைத் தமிழக முதல்வருக்கு அவர் பரிசாக அளித்ததுடன் அதற்கான காரணத்தை ஆட்சியரின் ஃபேஸ்புக்கில் பதிவிட்டிருக்கிறார் என்பதுதான்![14] “சாதி, மத வேறுபாடுகள் இல்லாமல், அனைத்து மதத்தினரையும் அரவணைத்துச் செல்லும் பொறுப்பில் உள்ள மாவட்ட கலெக்டர், ஒரு மதத்தைத் தூக்கிப்பிடிக்கும் வகையில் செய்திருப்பது கண்டனத்துக்குரியது. இது அவர் வகிக்கும் பொறுப்புக்கு அழகல்ல. அவரை உடனடியாகப் பதவிநீக்கம் செய்ய வேண்டும்,” என்று அத்தலைவர் தன் ஃபேஸ்புக்கில் எழுதியுள்ளதாகவும், இதனால் ஒரு பெரும் ‘சர்ச்சை’ வெடித்துள்ளதாகவும், ஒரு செய்தி வெளியாகியிருக்கிறது[15].
மார்க்சீய காந்தியின் முன்னுரை: புதுக்கோட்டை மாவட்ட ஆட்சியர் மீதான பாஜக தலைவரின் குற்றச்சாட்டு, அந்த நூல் மீதும் அதை எழுதியவர் மீதுமான குற்றச்சாட்டுமாகும். .‘அறியப்படாத கிறிஸ்தவம்’ நூலுக்கு எழுதியுள்ள முன்னுரையில், “நேருவின், காந்தியின், போஸின் இந்தியாவின் ஒரு துளி” என்று அவர் தன்னை அடையாளப்படுத்திக் கொள்கிறார். மேலும், “என் பெயர் நான் விரும்பியோ, விரும்பாமலோ என் அடையாளமாகிவிட்டது. அதை நான் மாற்றுவதற்கில்லை. ஆனால், அது என் மதம், சாதி சார்ந்த அடையாளமல்ல,” என்றும், தமிழகத்தைப் பொறுத்தவரை, “கிறிஸ்தவம் என்ற மதம் இம்மண்ணில் வெளியிலிருந்து வந்ததே என்பதை மறுப்பதற்கில்லை… இதுதான் என் மண். இந்த நிலம் என் மூதாதையர்களின் ரத்தமும் வியர்வையும் சிந்தி உழைத்த நிலம். தமிழ் எங்கள் அடையாளம், உயிர் மூச்சு. அந்த உணர்வே முதல். மற்றவை எல்லாம்… அது சாதியாகட்டும், மதமாகட்டும், பின்னர்தான்… தமிழக தேவாலயங்களுக்கான ‘கைடு புக்’ அல்ல இந்நூல்,” என்று அவர் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்[16].

Far too long has history been lost in the pages of convention and chronicling. Wars, thriving economies, great rulers, vicious villains, archaeological findings and politics have always taken the spotlight in showcasing historical timelines that the voice of humans seemed to be lost. Now, at the cusp of the 21st century, travel facilities, digital data and information access is opening up opportunities to look into the past like never before. Nivedita Louis has surely jumped headlong into this newly opened portal taking us with her through this book that connects the present and the past using the narratives of current day stakeholders.
Expression of faith in the Tamil country was and is still important. The celebrated Sangam literature of the 2nd and 3rd century offers a unique concept of different landscapes in Tamilnadu and corresponding life-systems that even include religious identities of the people living in each one of them. Does Christianity fit into this accepted classical codification and do the poetics of the Tamil landscape accept the tenets of this religion are questions that are answered in this book fortuitously though they were not at all asked!
Nivedita begins the book with a wonderful question — What is an old stone Coonan Cross doing in a remote little church set amidst the sparse coastal salt pans of Southern Tamilnadu (Coonan Cross is the definitive symbol of Thomas Christians of Kerala)? This sets the tone for the book as we travel along with the author across Tamilnadu unraveling regional history with unexpected discoveries, unlikely alliances, unique juxtaposition of historical parallels and corroboration of oral history with documented evidences. Objects, architecture, inscriptions, rituals, stories and memories encountered during the travels are navigated with ease by the historian.
Travelling to sixty and more locations as part of fieldwork for this book, the journey and current condition of these places are recorded with lucid reality and humour. This is a necessity as it captures the evolution of both well-known and lesser-known landmarks through time. It also serves as intermittent relief in this mammoth two volume work that is bursting in its spines with information on history, ethnicity, subcultures, rituals, symbolism, acculturation, communal harmony, casteism, folklore, literature, cuisine, popular culture, activism and more. Yet it sails excitedly in a framework of empirical research transcending the travel genre. As rightly pointed out by Mr. Bhakthavasala Bharathy in ‘Ariyapadadha Christhavam’ this has been possible because Nivedita traverses the Tamil country as a ‘Christian’ insider. In understanding the nuances and interplay of different streams of Christianity at work here, she does not desist from reaching out to those who can offer a better grasp of the specifics in each. I view this as one of the paramount achievements of this book. In its pages we find Roman Catholics, Protestants, Lutherans, Salvationists and others comfortably sharing space, stories and secrets to Nivedita. These are presented in the book in such a way that differences are understood and accepted. From diversity emerges a hero at the end of this effort, but not without the relentless telling of harsh truths and painful pasts.
Unexpectedly, almost each chapter begins with a Christian poem or lyric in Tamil. Not just any odd song but one that is vital to the narration of events and history in the place in question. Nivedita gives a prime space to these Tamil folk and literary devices in her narration, since they effectively communicate the ‘belongingness’ of the Christian faith and beliefs to the landscape. At Vadakankulam this search even led to the unearthing of Purādhana Kummi. Kummi is a Tamil literary form that enables singing of the lyrics by women while performing a simple circular dance. The rich history of Vadankulam spanning nearly four centuries is narrated through the lyrics. The author unable to find this resource even in Vadankulam traced it in a PHd thesis and has reproduced it in this book successfully. A ‘Sanskrit blessing’ for newlyweds that has its origins at Vadankulam surfaces 500kms away at Thennur during the field research. Similarly a ‘vāsāppu’ play or drama that has been performed since 150 years at Aiyampettai depicting St. Anthony is documented. The play employs Tamil literary devices such as venpā, viruttham, kalippā, sindhu, akaval etc. Surprise entries in this line up is the Ūñcal Lāli pāttu by Abraham Pandithar and Gnāna ētha pāttu by Vedanyagam Sastriyar (1815). While the former is a felicitation for newlyweds as they sit in a swing, the latter is to be sung during the strenuous work of drawing water from wells for the fields — both Christian in content. The ōdaipāttu or song for the stream at Mudalur is endearing in its celebration of water as a precious resource and the fishes it brings to the little village. Nivedita thus eliminates the need to separately wax eloquent about the contribution of Christians to the Tamil literary world.
Through a multi-disciplinary approach, painstaking collection and presentation of immensely valuable information, Nivedita Louis has opened the way for further research opportunities in Tamilnadu. Academic researchers, bloggers, script writers, history buffs, musicians, photographers, folklorists, etc can all benefit through a reading of this book. Ariyapadātha Christhavam is a telling of history that is alive and kicking, brimming with humans especially women. It does not hide the fault-lines found in the Christian religious practices. Instances of exclusivity and caste prejudices are mentioned throughout. Ruffle feathers it will as it takes the bull by its horns — and I am not referring to the ‘Christian’ Jallikattu bull featured in the cover! To those who seek to learn and explore identities we share as people of Tamilnadu and beyond — this book is a rare treasure.
