US child sex abuse case: ‘Kerala priest a threat to Indian children’
    Agencies : Chicago, Thu Sep 08 2011, 09:29 hrs
    http://www.indianexpress.com/news/us-child-sex-abuse-case-kerala-priest-a-threat-to-indian-children/843388/0

An Indian priest who molested several young girls in the United States remains a threat to children in India, a lawyer for one of his victims has said in announcing a $750,000 settlement.

Reverend Joseph Jeyapaul returned to India before the charges came to light and has not yet returned to face criminal charges in the United States.

Attorneys for his US victim said they believe he is still in active ministry in India working as the administrator of 40 schools.

“We’re scared for those kids in India,” said attorney Jeffrey Anderson, who has filed scores of claims on behalf of victims of child sex abuse by priests.

“We are concerned that he’s still in ministry and we know that he still has access to kids.”

Jeyapaul – who was temporarily assigned to the Diocese of Crookston in Minnesota in 2004 – was accused of repeatedly molesting a 16-year-old girl in the rectory.

Two other victims have since come forward, Anderson said.

Jeyapaul insisted that he was innocent when the allegations made headlines last year and received a letter of support from over 1,100 parishioners in India urging US officials to drop criminal charges.

Bishop A Amalraj, head of the Ootacamund diocese in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, said last year that he believed the charges were “blown out of proportion.”

However, Jeyapaul was being monitored by church officials and his work did not put him in contact with women or children, the bishop told said.

Church officials in India were not immediately available for comment.

A former Roman Catholic priest accused of sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl in Minnesota has been arrested in his native country of India, where he was a fugitive for the past several years.

The Rev Joseph Palanivel Jeyapaul fled to southern India after he was accused of molesting Megan Peterson, now 22.

Ms Peterson came forward last fall to say she was abused by Jeyapaul in 2004 when she was seeking advice about becoming a nun.

The Rev. Joseph Palanivel Jeyapaul appeared Monday in a New Delhi court and will be held in custody pending a formal U.S. request for his extradition, to be filed along with case evidence, government officials said.

But he won’t go to trial any time soon – processing the request could take up to three months.

Police detained Jeyapaul on Friday near the southern Indian town of Erode after Interpol issued an alert, police Subinspector Pugal Maran told the Associated Press.

Jeyapaul, 57, an Indian citizen, has denied molesting a Ms Peterson when he was working at the Blessed Sacrament Church in Greenbush, a Minnesota town near the Canadian border.

Priesthood: Jeyapaul worked as a priest at Infant Jesus Church in India, but was banned from being around children

Captured: He was arrested in the Erode district, in the southern state of Tamil Nadu

He returned to India in 2005 to visit his ailing mother, and was asked not to return to the Minnesota church after being accused of having an inappropriate relationship with another 16-year-old.

The criminal case relating to the 14-year-old was filed later. Jeyapaul never returned to the United States and has been a fugitive there ever since.

Vatican officials recommended Jeyapaul’s removal from the priesthood, but the local Indian bishop instead sentenced him to a year in a monastery through a canonical trial, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Jeyapaul was one of many foreign priests brought to the United States to help fill shortages in American parishes.

Ms Paterson told the paper she was shocked that Jeyapaul was arrested so quickly, following a March 11 interview she did with the Tribune.

‘I find it quite ironic that we did that interview and then a week later he is in handcuffs,’ Ms Peterson said.

‘I wasn’t expecting it to happen this fast.’

Former priest set free in child abuse case

Policetti’s alleged victim told First Assistant State’s Attorney Shauna Boliker that she no longer wished to pursue the case, effectively forcing prosecutors to drop it.

An Indian Catholic priest accused in a sexual assault case in the United States was set free today as the victim no longer wished to pursue the case against him.

Cook County prosecutors said Monday that they are ending their decade-long effort to extradite Fr Sleeva Raju Policetti, who was charged with 20 counts of criminal sexual assault and abuse of a 16-year-old Chicago girl.

Policetti’s alleged victim told First Assistant State’s Attorney Shauna Boliker that she no longer wished to pursue the case, effectively forcing prosecutors to drop it.

“With any case, our victims’ wishes, No. 1, are foremost in our minds,” Boliker said.

“We need her cooperation and participation. … This is a decade later and a different time of her life.”

The assaults allegedly took place over a year in the rectory of the St. Tancissus Church in Chicago, where Policetti 53,was assigned as an extern priest.

Hyderabad archdiocese had sent him to the United States in 1999.

Policetti has maintained he was innocent ever since he abruptly left Chicago in 2002.

Six years later after a canonical trial, the Vatican took the rare and severe step of defrocking Policetti over the sexual assault allegations.

Still, Policetti continued to use the title of “Reverend,” and as recently as 2010, he sent Chicago parishioners greeting cards soliciting donations, saying he ran an orphanage and school near Hyderabad, the Tribune claimed.

Policetti’s alleged victim initially worked with authorities, setting in motion an international extradition.

But in recent days, she said she wanted to put the incident behind her.

The archdiocese reached an out-of-court settlement with Policetti’s alleged victim, a person with knowledge of the case confirmed. The Church declined to disclose details.

The Chicago Tribune reported that its investigations have found that Policetti is one of at least 32 Roman Catholic priests nationwide since 1985 who have absconded to foreign countries while facing criminal charges or investigations in the U.S.

In March, fugitive priest Joseph Jeyapaul was arrested in India after seven years on the run from charges that he sexually assaulted a 14-year-old Minnesota girl.
